New Zealand  Update

You Cane Give Initiative is so grateful to our many partners who, even on their own adventures, collaborate with YCG to make such a lasting impact!

Here is a summary of Ellie’s recent trip to New Zealand :

“My trip to New Zealand was a heartwarming and enriching experience. It began with a traditional Māori welcome ceremony, the pōwhiri, at the Vision Rehabilitation Services (VRS) training center. This beautiful ritual, which included formal speeches (whaikōrero), singing (waiata), and sharing of food (kai), made me feel truly honored and connected to the culture. The ceremony was led by the gracious matriarchs, Atareta and Marta, whose warm welcome was unforgettable.

During my visit, I had the privilege of donating essential supplies to individuals from the Māori community—18 white folding canes, a sack of replacement tips, solar audio players, and reflective safety vests. Although unexpected heavy rains and holidays limited my ability to meet as many blind Māori individuals as I had hoped, the time spent with the dedicated VRS team—Mary Grace Roaquin, Maya, Wendy, and Daniel—was incredibly meaningful.

The VRS team expressed deep gratitude for the donated supplies and the connections we forged. They are working diligently to overcome barriers within the government medical system, striving to become a recognized provider of equipment and services for the blind in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Despite the challenges, their commitment and passion are truly inspiring. This journey left me with lasting memories and a profound appreciation for the resilience and warmth of the people I met.”

Thank you to Elie and all of our partners who reflect the passion of YCG and seeing the importance of providing white canes and training a life saving experience, equipping people to live the lives they were created for!
